Course Description:  

In this presentation, Dr. Little will define and characterize different types of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), highlight the evidence supporting the beneficial effects of HIIT in cardiometabolic disease, discuss why HIIT may be an attractive and efficacious exercise option, and identify areas of emerging interest in the field of HIIT. 

Learning objectives:

  2. Describe the evidence supporting the potential application of HIIT in cardiometabolic disease 
  3. Explain why HIIT can be an effective exercise strategy 
  4. Evaluate the potential application of different types of HIIT for different types of clients/patients

Presented by Jonathan Little, PhD, FACSM

Jonathan Little, PhD, FACSM, is Professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Kelowna, BC, Canada. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the areas of exercise metabolism, exercise immunology, type 2 diabetes, and nutrition.  Little received his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from McMaster University, an MSc focusing on Sport Nutrition from University of Saskatchewan, a PhD specializing in human skeletal muscle metabolism from McMaster University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in immunology at UBC. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, including several highly cited papers on high-intensity interval training (HIIT). At UBC, his Exercise, Metabolism, and Inflammation Laboratory has the goal of optimizing lifestyle interventions for the prevention, treatment, and reversal of type 2 diabetes and its cardiometabolic complications. Among many awards and accolades, he was the recipient of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) New Investigator Award in 2016 and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Young Investigator Award in 2020.
