Industry Presented Webinar | Internal and External Load - Monitoring Strategies for Recovery and Strength throughout the Season
1 CEC
Sponsored by: Gatorade Sports Science Institute
Course Description:
Monitoring training load and the athlete’s response to it may help optimize the athlete’s health, adaptations and readiness while potentially reducing the risk of injury during training and competition. Personalized load- monitoring approaches make sense because of the variability of training and competition demands across sports and positions. The time-course of recovery following competition varies by sport and experience of the athlete. Understanding your sport’s time-course of recovery is important for deciding when and how to monitor your athletes, and identifying behavior modification strategies based on internal and external load characteristics may help improve recovery across the competitive season.
Learning objectives:
After participation, attendees should be able to:
- Differentiate between internal and external load stressors on the athlete,
- Understand the importance of individualized differences, and
- Thoroughly review potential behaviors that mitigate recovery.
Presented by Eric Freese, Ph.D.

His research has ranged from assessing metabolic and physiological responses to high-intensity interval training to scrutinizing the purported mental and physiological benefits of phytonutrient supplementation. His interests focus on optimizing the recovery period to translate to increased performance capabilities.
