Sedentary behavior (e.g., sitting) has emerged as a potential independent risk factor for chronic disease and premature mortality. Learn about the evidence for this relationship and the possible biological mechanisms behind it.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand and describe the associations between sedentary behavior and health outcomes;
  2. Understand the biological changes that occur with exposure to sedentary behavior and recovery; and
  3. Understand the phenotypic and behavioral characteristics of animals that have been selectively bred for physical inactivity.
