Equality vs. Equity-Based Approaches to Promoting Health and Fitness in Diverse Populations
1 CEC
Presented by Rebecca Hasson, Sharon Ross, and Vincenzo Nocera
Description: Despite the clear and consistent evidence that regular physical activity (PA) is an important component of healthy lifestyles, more than 75% of the American public is not meeting the PA guidelines. Lower PA participation rates among women, racial/ethnic minorities, individuals experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage, persons with disabilities, and adults ages 65 and older highlight some of the important disparities that exist. Moving beyond equality-based, “one-size-fits-all” approaches to increasing PA participation is needed to close the disparities gap. This lecture will highlight effective equity-based strategies to promote health and fitness in diverse populations.
