ACSM's 2020 International Health & Fitness Virtual Summit Video CEC: After School Physical Activity Programs: A Unique New Business Opportunity for Fitness Professionals

Walt Thompson, PHD, FACSM, Executive Director, After-School All-Stars Atlanta, Georgia State University, Stockbridge, GA

For 26 years After-School All-Stars Atlanta (ASAS) has used strategically designed, developed and tested models to engage middle-school-aged at-risk children. Students are overwhelmingly minority, 100% qualify under federal guidelines for “free or reduced price lunch,” and all live in high crime neighborhoods. The purpose of this program is to offer age-appropriate, culturally relevant and free programs to families who cannot afford after-school programs. A second purpose is to provide structured physical activity and nutrition classes in schools where they do not exist creating a unique environment in which health fitness professionals can work.

Learning Objectives

1. to effectively describe ASAS Project CHEW as an alternative to no day school physical activity programs

2. to offer the after-school environment as an option for health fitness professionals to engage with children

3. to describe physical activity and nutrition opportunities for children living in the inner city
