Coaching HIIT: A Practical Approach to Programming

This first of a three-part multimedia series that will provide information on aspects of preparing and leading a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class for novice, intermediate, and advanced clients. This course provides an introduction to HIIT, how trainers can assess and prepare clients for bodyweight HIIT, considerations for designing a HIIT course, and keys to success. Also included are detailed demonstrations of squat, push-up, vertical pull, glute-bridge, and broad jump exercises, common mistakes, and how to correct them.

Presenter: Tony Maloney, BS, ACSM-EP is currently a coach with Orangetheory Fitness. He has over 15 years of experience in the fitness industry. He has taught and coached high-intensity interval training sessions for 8 years. Tony has worked with hundreds of clients of different fitness levels to achieve both fitness and lifestyle outcomes. Tony’s passion for coaching, mentoring, and speaking is evident in the presentations he has given to countless individuals ranging from college students, corporate leaders, members, and fellow fitness professionals.

Learning Objectives:

• Apply the tools to assess client readiness for HIIT programming.

• Develop HIIT programming for novice clients based on appropriate exercise prescription considerations.

• Demonstrate understanding of correct exercise technique for body weight exercises.

• Use the art of coaching to implement cues to correct common errors.
