ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal®: July - August 2022 CEC Course #4: The Use of Limb Blood Flow Occlusion for Rehabilitation and Performance
1 CEC
By Brian C. Rider, PhD; Grace L. Ditzenberger; Benjamin A. Cox, DO, RMSK; and Alexander H.K. Montoye, PhD, FACSM
Occlusion training has grown in popularity over the years. It is commonly used across a variety of populations and training and sports settings. Additionally, it has found a home in clinical settings as it allows individuals with limitations to see a hypertrophic benefit from resistance training at light loads (blood flow restriction [BFR]) and possibly by protecting against ischemia during exercise (ischemic preconditioning [IPC]). For fitness professionals working with healthy individuals, both BFR and IPC should be viewed as “tools in their toolbox” that can be employed in certain circumstances to assist clients in maximizing the effectiveness of their exercise programs.
