COVID-19: Special Considerations and Return of Play Across Sports

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic brought the sporting world to a standstill. Professional, college, and youth sports around the world were postponed or canceled. The sports medicine community was also quiet during this time and as the world begins to reopen, sports and sports medicine are following suit. However, proceeding too quickly and without a purposeful and well thought out approach may prove disastrous. Join our distinguished panel of sports medicine physicians and scientists as they discuss the unique considerations of youth, college, and professional elite competitive athletes, with respect to the infectious disease and cardiac processes. In addition, they will examine youth sports, the NCAA, and the major professional sports and how each of these returned to play with a focus on the overall risks, benefits, and subsequent knowledge learned from these experiences.

Objectives: After participation, the attendee should:

1. have a thorough understanding of the unique nature of the COVID-19 pandemic effects on the competitive athlete.
2. have an understanding of post COVID-19 diagnostic testing, management, treatment, use of immunizations, and screening for potential cardiac complications.
3. have an understanding of return to play guidelines as they are understood at this time and the potential future directions as we continue to increase our understanding in the sports medicine community.

Buddy Creech, M.D., MPH, FAAP, FPIDS
Associate Professor, Pediatric Infectious Diseases and
Director, Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program

Dr. Buddy Creech serves as Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Vanderbilt Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit, and Co-Principal Investigator of the CDC-sponsored Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment Network. Dr. Creech’s research interests focus on the development and evaluation of new vaccines and therapeutics, particularly vaccines targeting influenza, pertussis, and S. aureus. His work combines innovative clinical trial design and next-generation immunologic assays to characterize the human response to infection and disease. He is currently leading COVID-related clinical trials at VUMC, including the evaluation of novel treatment options for hospitalized patients with COVID and trials of candidate SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

Aaron Baggish, M.D., FACC, FACSM

Dr. Aaron Baggish is the Director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital Heart Center. He serves as team cardiologist / physician for numerous athletic organizations including US Soccer, US Rowing, Harvard University Athletics, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, New England Revolution, and is medical director for the BAA Boston Marathon. His on-going research focuses on heart function and heart disease in athletic individuals.

Andrew Gregory, M.D., FAAP, FACSM, FAMSSM

Dr. Gregory completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Indiana University and
received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He then finished a pediatric residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham before his fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute. He joined the Vanderbilt Faculty in August 2001 where he sees young sports medicine patients in the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Center and the Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
