Description
Osteoarthritis (OA) and low back pain are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions, causing years of disability. Unfortunately, individuals with these disorders often become sedentary to avoid pain, inadvertently worsening their existing condition and becoming more susceptible to inactivity-related diseases.
This module, from the Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) Online Course, will help you to effectively aid clients/patients with osteoarthritis and/or low back pain. Learn how to modify each element of an exercise prescription based on the individual’s joint response, program goals and personal preferences.
The module also includes demonstration videos covering strength, flexibility and balance exercises for those with OA and a helpful PDF document of the information presented.
Learning objectives
After completing this module, participants will be able to:
- Explain the basic pathophysiology of OA and low back pain;
- Paraphrase or describe to patients the purpose and benefits of being physically active based on their individual needs and condition;
- Determine the appropriate dosage, frequency, intensity, time and type of physical activity needed to manage OA and low back pain and be able to communicate this to the patient and the health care team;
- Describe how to individualize an exercise plan for clients/patients with OA or low back pain based on their response to exercise, personal considerations and potential contraindications;
- Explain how commonly prescribed pharmacological agents may affect the individual’s response to exercise and how a change in activity could potentially interact with or affect responses to pharmaceutical interventions; and
- Understand when to refer a client/patient back to their health care provider.
