Description 

Since 2009, the number of U.S. adults 65 and over has increased by 36% and will reach 80 million in 2040. These older adults want to live better, not just longer. An appropriately designed exercise program can help them do just that. 

This module, from the Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) Online Course, provides the essential framework for designing exercise programs for older adults and frail older adults to improve both health and function. It also includes a helpful review PDF of the information provided. 

Learning objectives 

After completing this module, participants will be able to: 

  1. Paraphrase or describe to older adults the purpose and benefits of being physically active based on their individual needs, interests and conditions; 
  2. Determine the appropriate dosage, frequency, intensity, time and type of physical activity recommended to improve and maintain health, fitness and physical function; and 
  3. Describe how to individualize an exercise plan based on the special needs of older adults, including personal considerations and precautions. 

Contributing Authors

Paige Denison is the director of health, wellness and Project Enhance® at Sound Generations in Seattle, Washington, a multiservice organization serving older adults and people aging with disability. Her oversight includes two evidence-based health promotion programs: Enhance®Wellness and Enhance®Fitness. 

Barbara Resnick, Ph.D., CRNP, is a professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the Sonya Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology. Her research is focused on optimizing function and physical activity among frail older adults in long-term care settings, particularly those with cognitive impairment. 

Jeffrey Schlicht, Ph.D., is a professor of health promotion and exercise sciences at Western Connecticut State University who works in community settings promoting resistance training for older adults and people with intellectual disabilities.
