Facilitating Behavior Change - The Coach Approach | EIM Online Module

Description

Health fitness professionals routinely help clients and patients put together a safe and effective exercise program. But what if there’s a better way to guide people to an active lifestyle? Learn evidence-based, practical techniques to help your clients and patients take ownership of their journey to better health.

This module, from the Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) Online Course, was developed with assistance from ACSM’s partner Wellcoaches®, experts in health and wellness coaching. It includes video discussions and demonstrations, interactive study breaks and helpful PDF notes.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and apply the transtheoretical model of behavior change, social-cognitive theory, self-determination theory and affective-reflective theory;
  2. Utilize the cognitive-behavioral techniques of decisional balance, goal-setting (SMART goals), self-monitoring, self-efficacy enhancement and relapse-prevention strategies to improve clients’ exercise enjoyment, adoption and adherence; and
  3. Conduct effective motivational interviewing that empowers clients to create and sustain their own health/physical activity plan based on their strengths, personal motivators and values (patient-centered approach).
