CEPA Webinar: To HIIT or Not to HIIT? The Feasibility of Doing High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) in Clinical Populations

Presenter: Sheri R. Colberg, PhD, FACSM

This lecture will discuss the importance and feasibility of doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT), particularly when used as a population health solution and implemented in clinical populations (such as older adults and those with type 2 diabetes). A number of questions remain related to doing HIIT, such as how should HIIT be defined and using what intervals? Does HIIT really save that much time? As far as population health is concerned, do people actually like doing HIIT, and will they be motivated to do it on their own? Is it feasible as a population health strategy to prevent and manage chronic disease? This lecture will address these questions and others related to the implementation of HIIT in all adults and clinical populations.

Sheri R. Colberg, PhD, FACSM, is Professor Emerita of Exercise Science from Old Dominion University and former Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School. After received her education from Stanford, University of California, Davis, and Cal Berkeley, she has become an internationally recognized authority on exercise and diabetes. She has led the way in shaping physical activity guidelines for many professional organizations, including the American Diabetes Association, American College of Sports Medicine, and American Association of Diabetes Educators. A successfully funded research and the author of 10 books, 21 book chapters, and nearly 300 articles, she recently was the recipient of the American Diabetes Association 2016 Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award. She is also the founder of Diabetes Motion (www.diabetesmotion.com) a web site dedicated to helping educate people with diabetes about physical activity, and Diabetes Motion Academy (www.dmacademy.com), which provides continuing education programs for fitness and other health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

• Better understand the current definition of HIIT and SIT (sprint interval training) with regard to research studies in general and clinical populations.

• Increase awareness of issues related to feasibility and implementation of fad fitness activities like HIIT that claim to benefit the health of the majority of adults.

• Be able to present an argument for or against HIIT as a population health strategy to prevent and manage chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.
