CEPA Webinar: Arterial Stiffness: Its influence on cardiovascular disease and therapeutic interventions

Presented by: Dr. Tim Werner

Arterial stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and one of the best predictors for future cardiovascular events. Often confused with atherosclerosis, arterial stiffness is a separate vascular pathology, creating unique cardiovascular consequences. When the arterial walls become compromised there is a change in the structural proteins resulting in a stiffer phenotype. Overtime, stiffer arteries will have a detrimental impact on left ventricular afterload and myocardial perfusion, stimulating left ventricular hypertrophy and congestive heart failure. This webinar will explain the physiological significance of arterial stiffness, how to analyze it, and the factors promoting it. Current therapeutic approaches focusing on exercise recommendations, dietary modifications, and pharmacological interventions will also be addressed.

Tim Werner has a doctorate in Clinical Physiology and Metabolism from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University. He is a certified Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Clinical Exercise Physiologist from ACSM. He also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from NCSA and a Certified Exercise Physiologist from ASEP. He currently is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science at Salisbury University. His research interests are in the areas of arterial stiffness and exercise training, in particular resistance training and high intensity interval training. He teaches several undergraduate and graduate level courses in clinical exercise physiology, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, exercise metabolism, and fitness testing. He is also actively involved with ACSM, NSCA, and CEPA.
