CEPA Webinar: Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection: Case Study and Implications for Cardiac Rehabilitation
This presentation will present an overview of spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), follow along with a young female personal trainer from diagnosis to “graduation” from a home based cardiac rehabilitation program, then cover some of the unique challenges of working with this population.

His career in clinical exercise physiology began in earnest during his graduate school days at the University of Virginia. Since graduating from UVA in 1997, he has worked at Hammons Heart Institute in Springfield, Mo., before moving to Denver, Colorado in 1998.
While in Colorado he furthered his education in clinical exercise and rehabilitation by studying the biomechanics of human movement and training in Muscle Activation Techniques (has foundations in massage therapy).
In the spring of 2002, he began work at Kaiser Permanente in Denver as its first masters-prepared clinical exercise physiologist in the stress test and cardiovascular rehabilitation departments. He oversaw the stress test department from 2004 until 2006, when he worked with senior leadership in cardiovascular services to create a new service line for the rehabilitation of cardiovascular and vascular surgery patients. This pilot program was designed for one-on-one consultation, assessment and follow-up on these patients to better suit the needs of patients who cannot attend or afford the more traditional rehabilitation programs. This turned into a one-of-a-kind program within Kaiser Permanente nationwide and the PAD Rehabilitation Program is rare in today’s healthcare systems. These programs have proved to be a success and have been thriving for the past 11+ years. In the past few years he helped lead a team to implement an exercise vital sign into the region’s electronic medical record. 2014 he was part of the team who internalized cardio-pulmonary stress testing into Cardiovascular Services and is currently working on a potentially new virtual/remote cardiovascular rehabilitation program.
Mark has been involved with American College of Sports Medicine and with the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA) as the first continuing education chair. He has been president of the Rocky Mountain chapter of the ACSM and past Chair of the Registered Clinical Exercise Physiology Practice Board for ACSM. He has been a reviewer for multiple clinical exercise physiology texts, has co-authored a chapter in the 3rd Edition of Ehrman, Gordon, Visich and Keteyian Clinical Exercise Physiology book and is currently working on co-authoring chapters for two new ACSM text books on clinical exercise physiology and exercise testing and prescription.
