Knowledge of energy expenditure during human locomotion remains integral for optimizing performance. Athletes, laborers, and tactical personnel often move under extreme conditions that warp principles of energetics established for traditional laboratory steady state exercises. Steep slopes, heavy loads, severe intensities, and hot environmental conditions are potentially devastating conditions for the unprepared, which can push the limits of locomotor performance and exercise beyond the aerobic domain. Fortunately, each of these threats can be mitigated by recent advances on our understanding of locomotion energetics under extreme conditions. Presenters will translate new evidence from exercise energetic studies into actionable strategies for maximal performance when navigating uphill and downhill slopes, carrying large equipment, training at or above critical metabolic power, and exercising in the heat. Ultimately, learners will be equipped with an energetics-based guideline, decision aids, and countermeasures for safe and efficient exercise under these extreme stressors.
