Low energy availability (LEA) is a mismatch between an athlete’s energy intake and their exercise energy expenditure that leaves insufficient support for important body systems — a condition that underpins the RED-S and Female and Male Athlete Triad syndromes. From an evolutionary, medical, and sports science lens, this course explores how humans may respond to an LEA environment: How is metabolic rate reduced? And is it transient/advantageous or maladaptive/detrimental?
