Description: Priscilla M. Clarkson Tutorial Lecture | Exercise and Circadian Clocks: Partners in Health from ACSM's 2022 Annual Meeting & World Congresses

Circadian clocks are a fundamental component of virtually every cell in the body, including skeletal muscle. In addition to time keeping, circadian clocks regulate a daily program in gene expression that is important for cell homeostasis and resilience. Both rodent and clinical studies have demonstrated that disrupting the muscle clock is associated with weakness and impaired glucose metabolism. This talk will walk through the basics of the muscle clock, how lifestyle factors such as exercise interact with the clock and will finish with some discussion about the potential for scheduled exercise as a therapeutic strategy for conditions, such as aging, to improve clock function and muscle health.
