Description: Morris/Paffenbarger EIM Keynote Lecture | The Science of Behavior Change to Promote Physical Activity and Address Health Disparities from ACSM's 2022 Annual Meeting & World Congresses

Underserved populations, including racial/ethnic minorities and individuals with low socioeconomic status are less likely to engage in sufficient moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and are thus at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. These populations face unique challenges to the initiation, adoption and maintenance of MVPA. Learning how to overcome these challenges is a necessary first step in achieving health equity through health promotion research. Dr. Marcus' presentation will discuss the importance of physical activity interventions that could reduce disparities and prevent disease in high risk, underserved populations. Dr. Marcus will present outcomes, challenges faced, opportunities for using technology to promote PA, and strategies for designing and testing culturally-tailored, home-based physical activity interventions among racial/ethnic minority populations, particularly Latinas.
