Joseph B. Wolffe Memorial Lecture | The ABCs...

1 CEC

Description: Joseph B. Wolffe Memorial Lecture | The ABCs of Movement in Early Childhood: Building Blocks for Lifetime Physical Activity from ACSM's 2022 Annual Meeting & World Congresses

The importance of physical activity is exemplified in the emergence of physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, according to the World Health Organization. Tracking data suggest the importance of establishing physical activity behaviors during childhood, with some evidence for early childhood. Although physical activity is often considered in terms of meeting public health recommendations, several other, important aspects of physical activity exist. For the early childhood years, it is particularly important to consider multiple aspects of physical activity behavior (e.g., play and motor competence). This talk will highlight what is known about various aspects of physical activity during early childhood and how these aspects may relate to future behavior. Multiple perspectives will be represented, from bench to field-based settings.
