Fitness For All Abilities: Integration Of Individuals With Disabilities Into the Fitness Community

Health and fitness professionals have the privilege of working with all populations to enhance lives.  However, a challenge exists when fitness professionals do not exhibit the confidence to work with individual with disabilities.  At the same time, those individuals with disabilities frequently report not feeling welcome in the fitness arena.  This session will enable the fitness profession to apply practical methods of inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the fitness community.  Real-life examples of programs will be part of the presentation.

Learning Objectives:

1. Assess specific training needs of current employees in order to integrate those with disabilities into an exercise programming model.
2. Develop exercise programming strategies to meet the needs of individuals in their communities with cognitive, sensory, motor, and physical limitations/disabilities. Program modifications are also addressed.
3. Identify the appropriate tools to assess the accessibility of a health and fitness program for those with disabilities. This applies to facilities, in-home, and online training.
4. Identify programs in practice and professional resources that support the health and fitness professional while working with individuals with disabilities.

This course includes an online video, PowerPoints and a corresponding online quiz.
