The Sports Medicine Essentials course is designed for medical providers seeking improved knowledge of common musculoskeletal, medical, and cardiac issues affecting athletes and physically active individuals of all ages.

This new, online course, developed by some of ACSM leading physicians and practitioners, may be taken as a standalone course, or in conjunction with the in-person session immediately following the ACSM Annual Meeting in Boston. The in-person component will allow for questions and interaction with experts in the field with a variety of hands-on workshops to reinforce and supplement skills from the online content.  

Included in the online course: 

  • Updates on concussion management 
  • The evidence behind the growing role of orthobiologics
  • Identification and treatment of common musculoskeletal conditions 
  • Identifying and managing cardiac issues unique to this population (including post-COVID) 
  • Issues unique to the pediatric athlete 
  • Improving physical rehabilitation principles for treatment and management of common conditions. 

This course is a must for any provider looking to improve their musculoskeletal exam skills, diagnostic acumen, and treatment strategies to care for athletes of all ages.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Improve musculoskeletal exam skills of the upper and lower extremity to accurately diagnose acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. 
  2. Improve knowledge of the special needs of pediatric and female athletes to facilitate safe participation in sport. 
  3. Develop a treatment plan that includes interventions such as physical therapy, medications, core stabilization, and injections to more effectively treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. 
  4. Effectively understand cardiac issues in the athlete to aid in diagnosis and return to play considerations. 
  5. Develop a protocol to diagnose and manage concussions on and off the field to facilitate safe return to academics and activities. 
  6. Understand the growing use of orthobiologics to guide counseling of patients when these procedures may be appropriate for their conditions. 
  7. Facilitate application of Exercise is Medicine principles to patient care and population health to improve quality of life.
