Currently, the ‘fastest growing’ subset of the population are those over the age of 85. Numerous studies now suggest that regular exercise prevents cellular senescence. This presentation, geared to the health-fitness practitioner, will review seminal and recent studies regarding the impact of regular aerobic exercise/resistance training on aerobic capacity, musculoskeletal strength/endurance, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, cognitive and sexual function, the postponement of disability, fundamentals of exercise prescription for older adults, and inspirational case studies.
· Explain the physiological effects of aging on the cardiovascular system.
· Describe the benefits of aerobic and muscular physical activity on aging.
· Explain the relationship of cognitive function and physical activity.
