ACSM's 2017 Health & Fitness Summit Online CEC: The Importance of Sleep to Health and Fitness
By Christopher Kline
Sleep is increasingly recognized for its importance in optimizing health and performance, but it has traditionally received little attention within the health/fitness field. Dr. Kline will discuss the evidence linking sleep to diet, physical activity, and weight loss, and summarize how sleep may contribute to optimal athletic performance. Dr. Kline will also review the fitness professional’s options for tracking sleep, screening for possible sleep disorders, and integrating better sleep habits into their clients’ lives.
Learning Objectives
· Differentiate the multiple complementary dimensions of sleep that are important to health besides duration (i.e., how much sleep one obtains);
· Describe how poor sleep could lead to poor weight management for adults attempting to lose weight;
· List at least 3 sleep hygiene recommendations that can be used to optimize an individual’s sleep health.
