By Zachary A Mang, PhD; Len Kravitz, PhD, CSCS

Summary:

Peripheral heart action (PHA) training is a simple application of circuit weight training (CWT) that alternates five to six upper- and lower-body exercises performed in a cyclical fashion. Unlike CWT, during which consecutive exercises are typically separated by 15-30 sec, PHA involves minimal and self-selected rest intervals between exercises. One bout of PHA leads to cardiorespiratory and metabolic stress that mimic traditional aerobic exercise. Moreover, long-term PHA programs have improved markers of cardiometabolic health, aerobic fitness, and muscular fitness in healthy and at-risk populations. Participants may find this style of training efficient and enjoyable as 24 sets of resistance exercise are completed in approximately 20 minutes. Several applications of PHA exist, and fitness professionals can design programs that use maximal or minimal equipment to best serve their clientele.
