Picture of the productExercise for Clients Taking an Anti-Obesity Medication

1 CEC

By Renee J. Rogers, Ph.D., FACSM

As the use of (and media attention on) anti-obesity medications (AOMs) increases, fitness professionals need to stay on top of current AOM research, learn about the effectiveness of approved AOMs, and keep an eye on those still in development.  This includes understanding indications for the use of AOMs and how they can contribute to holistic client care. These highly effective agents are considered life-changers for patients with chronic obesity, and exercise professionals have an opportunity to reframe programming with such medications in mind.

“The Only Disability in Life is a Bad Attitude” | An Exploration of Inspiration Porn and the Role of the Exercise Professional

1 CEC

By Anna Burt, BA and Randi Lite, MA, FACSM, CEP, NBC-HWC

“Inspiration porn” includes the use of depictions of disabled people* to motivate non-disabled people to exercise. Though the depictions show fit and positive images of disabled people, disabled activists view them as dehumanizing and devoid of social context related to systemic injustice. The exercise professional is encouraged to follow guidelines in evaluating their own use of these images.

*The authors have chosen to use identity-first language (“disabled person”) rather than person-first language (“person with a disability”) in this course. While we acknowledge the differing opinions surrounding which language to use, we have chosen identity-first language as we believe it better reflects disability as an important piece of an individual’s identity that one can claim in pride.

ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal®: March - April 2024 CEC Course #2: Back to the Basics: A Movement Approach Through Active Play

By: David Zavala, B.S.; Kyle A. Kercher, Ph.D., ACSM-EP, CSCS, CHWC; and Vanessa M. (Martinez) Kercher, Ph.D., ACSM-EP, CHWC

Children are enticed by sedentary behavior anywhere they go; thus, during these formative years, it is important to offer many active play opportunities. As children play, their motivation for physical activity sparks and they begin to create healthy habits that support their physical, social, and cognitive development. Active play is a great strategy to complement 24-hour movement guidelines for children as play is something that children connect with the most, making it easy to incorporate bouts of physical activity throughout the day. Another complementary tool is the emergence of nature-based play spaces that create environments that offer inclusive active play opportunities for children of all ages and development.

The benefits of engaging in regular physical activity are well known, however, a majority of adults in the United States fail to meet Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Incorporating novel strategies like digital fitness may reduce barriers to physical activity and help more people adopt health-promoting behaviors. With digital fitness playing an integral role in the future of the industry, practitioners should familiarize themselves with the current research supporting the use of digital strategies to improve physical activity behaviors in adults.
