Presenter: Katie Potter, Ph.D. | Assistant Professor of Kinesiology | University of Massachusetts Amherst

Description
Leveraging the human-dog bond may be an effective way to help dog-lovers of all ages become more physically active. In this talk, Dr. Potter will discuss the unique benefits (and risks) of physical activity in the company of dogs. She will summarize the state of the science on dogs as motivators of physical activity across age groups, and discuss future directions for this field of study, including current and planned work in her lab at UMass Amherst.
Learning Objectives Identify unique benefits of dog-facilitated physical activity • Identify unique risks of dog-facilitated physical activity • Identify gaps in the current literature on the physical activity benefits of dog ownership
Speaker Information Katie Potter, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UMass Amherst where her research focuses on leveraging the human-dog bond to promote physical activity. Since many people do not like to exercise or find it difficult to fit into their busy lives, her research involves promoting activities that people enjoy or deeply value and that get them moving as a ‘side-effect’.
