ACSM's From Around the Field: Knowing the Ropes: Exercise During Pregnancy: Promoting Health for Two Generations!

Dr. Mottola will describe the importance of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) and how this theory relates to preventing chronic disease risk in both mom and baby. Dr. Mottola will outline the latest guidelines for exercise during pregnancy and provide key factors for exercise recommendations and prescription. The presentation will provide tools to use for screening before exercise and will end with how to promote physical activity for pregnant individuals in daily life. 

Objectives:
After participation, the attendee should be able to:
1. Describe the theory of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) and how this theory relates to disease prevention in mom and baby. 
2. Summarize the latest recommendations and key factors for exercise prescription during pregnancy.  
3. Explore how to promote physical activity for pregnant individuals in daily life.

About the presenter
Dr. Mottola received her Masters degree and PhD from the University of Alberta. She is the director of the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation–Exercise and Pregnancy Laboratory; chair of the Maternal, Fetal & Newborn Health Division of the Children’s Health Research Institute in Ontario.  

Professor Mottola is an anatomist (embryologist) and exercise physiologist who has conducted research on the effects of maternal exercise on both the mother and the developing fetus. She was co-lead author on the 2019 Canadian Guideline for Physical Activity throughout Pregnancy which was based on rigorous evaluation of the current scientific literature through 12 systematic reviews published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. She also helped develop the Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy and the companion document for Health Care Providers, released on April 15th, 2021. Her current research focuses on the impact of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy and postpartum on chronic disease risks such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease for both mother and her offspring.
