COVID-19: Implications for Physical Activity, Health Disparities and Health Equity
May 12, 2022 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. EDT

Presenter: Rebecca Hasson, Ph.D, FACSM
Moderator: Vincenzo Nocera, Ph.D/NiCole R. Keith, Ph.D, FACSM

Description:

Physical activity is one of the most efficacious pathways to promoting mental and physical health, preventing disease and, most important during the COVID-19 pandemic, bolstering a stronger immune system. Efforts to “flatten the curve,” however, have exacerbated existing disparities in access to social and environmental supports for physical activity, potentially contributing to a widening gap in physical activity participation among those at greatest risk for COVID-19. Physical activity can play a special role in reducing the inequitable consequences of COVID-19; however, expansion and better targeting of evidence-informed interventions are needed that address the unique barriers present in economically and socially marginalized communities. This webinar will highlight effective and feasible strategies that provide more equitable access to physical activity programs and spaces across the United States

Objectives:
After participation, the attendee should:
1. Summarize how the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced access to physical activity opportunities in schools and communities.
2. Understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has increased disparities in physical activity participation.
3. Recognize the utility of physical activity to promote mental and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Take away Points
1. Practitioners should prioritize promoting physical activity as a safe and effective strategy to bolster the immune system.
2. Practitioners will be able to identify available resources designed to increase equitable access to physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
3. Policymakers will have an increased awareness of how to ensure safe use of public spaces for physical activity.
