ACSM's Brown Bag in Science: Skiing Even Faster: Winter Olympics in Beijing
February 1, 2022 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. EDT

Presenter: Hans-Christer Homberg  | Professor |  Luleå University of Technology, Sweden

Description
The presentation will cover research findings concerning some of the major physiological and biomechanical characteristics of successful Olympic skiers (with an emphasis on “narrow skis”), as well as summarize key aspects of their training and preparation for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Learning Objectives Identify the physiological and biomechanical challenges required for success in the Olympic skiing disciplines. • Recognize challenges skiers preparing for the Olympic Winter games in Beijing face (e.g., the difference in time zone, the high altitude at which competitions will take place, with dry and cold air and snow, as well as regulations concerning COVID-19). • Appreciate how sports scientists using frontline methodology have not only improved the performance of Olympic skiers, but have also bettered the health and well-being of the general population.
Speaker Information Professor H-C Holmberg works at the Luleå University of Technology in northern Sweden and is also affiliated as a senior scientist with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He founded the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre in 2006 and acted thereafter as its Director until 2015. To elucidate underlying mechanisms and improve athletic performance, Holmberg’s research focuses primarily on the physiological and biomechanical characteristics of elite athletes (with a special focus on skiers), in the laboratory as well as in the field.
As a leading researcher in the field of winter sports, Holmberg has published more than 220 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals of excellent reputation. In addition, during the past two decades he has served as Director for Research and Development at the Swedish Olympic Committee, which deals with both winter and summer sports.
