ACSM's From Around the Field Science Webinar: Physical Activity and Menopause Symptoms
Thursday, January 23, 2025 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET
In this webinar, Dr. Witkowski will present information on the changes in health that occur during the transition around menopause, or the final menstrual period. She will present information on the common symptoms of menopause with a focus on vasomotor symptoms (VMS), which include hot flashes and night sweats. She will share research on associations between VMS and cardiovascular disease risk and how her research is helping to improve understanding of the potential role of physical activity on VMS and health for those who experience menopause. The overall goal of this presentation is to help trainers, health practitioners, and others who interact with the population understand the issues facing people undergoing menopause so they can communicate accurate information with confidence.
Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the stages of reproduction as they pertain to menopause and the types and prevalence of symptoms that accompany the menopause transition.
2. To describe the association between vasomotor symptoms and cardiovascular disease risk.
3. To interpret the currently available evidence for the role of exercise and physical activity to impact vasomotor symptoms.
Presenter:
Sarah Witkowski, PhD
Associate Professor
Department of Exercise & Sport Studies
Smith College
About the presenter
For the past 10 years, Dr. Witkowski’s research has focused on cardiovascular disease risk in midlife women and those undergoing menopause, a period of vulnerability in health for women. She is interested in modifiers of blood vessel structure and function as changes in vascular characteristics commonly appear before overt signs of disease. Dr. Witkowski seeks to understand the role of habitual physical activity and acute exercise for this population. Her goal is to improve knowledge for patients and practitioners and enhance decision making and care for midlife women. Dr. Witkowski has served on regional and national ACSM committees and was awarded the Drinkwater Leadership Award in Women's Health, Sport & Physical Activity in 2024.
